Behind the Name

Behind the Name

Welcome to Et Habitavit Art Co.!

If you're wondering where our name came from, or why we chose such a difficult name to pronounce... then you're at the right spot. ;)

Years ago, I wrote "Et verbum caro factum est, et habitavit in nobis" on a whiteboard in the spare room we had named "The Art Room" (it has since been renamed several times... including "The School Room", "The Playroom", "The we-don't-know-where-this-goes-so-put-it-in-here Room"). I had picked up this Latin phrase from the Angelus: "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14).  The idea of Christ dwelling among us continues to pierce my heart, going deeper and bearing fruit in my life.

I've been dreaming of starting an art side hustle for years (shoutout to those of you who were with me for my short lived instagram art-selling days), but it's now finally happening through the perseverance and encouragement of my husband. When it came time to choose a name, we played around with a few but kept coming back to "Et Habitavit" for its rich meaning. We were enthralled by the idea of dwelling, of creating art that expressed where Christ dwelt... because in reality He is everywhere. He is in everything all around us, surrounding us like the wind rushing about a tree, bustling its leaves and moving its branches unseen. God almighty, the King of Kings, LORD of LORDS chose to humble Himself and make His dwelling among us. He loves us so much, and I think our hearts need this daily reminder that He loves us enough to come dwell with us daily if we allow Him.

... and last thing... I know you're thinking "Why not just give it an English name like Dwelt Among Us Design Co."? Great question. We thought about it too but decided to really put this business in the Lord's hands by giving our business a difficult to remember and hard to pronounce name. Truthfully, I thought the Latin looked prettier in the logo. All things come from God, and we will especially know His Providence if our difficult to pronounce company experiences any degree of success. ;)

Blessings dear friends!!

Kat

p.s. it's pronounced haaa-beeee-taaaaah-veeet. We promise we won't make you feel silly if you give it a try!
